Plain packaging and international trade

ICC UK has today filed a response to the Department for Health consultation on whether tobacco products should be sold in generic packs without branding or trademarks.

Our response highlights a number of trade- and investment-related issues arising from the proposals. In particular, we are concerned that so-called “plain-packaging” requirements would likely breach a number of the UK’s international obligations—including important WTO intellectual property agreements. It will be important to ensure that these issues are considered carefully by the Government in the weeks ahead.
